WWT
The Super Powers of Saltmarsh
To promote Wetland Potential Maps, which help decision-makers visualise the societal, environmental, and economic benefits of wetlands, we engaged specific stakeholders and demonstrated how the restoration of just 100,000 hectares of wetlands across the UK can provide significant benefits..

The brief
To raise awareness of WWT’s newly developed wetland mapping tools, and supported the charity’s key message about the high environmental, social and financial value of wetlands, with a specific focus on saltmarshes.
WWT wanted communications to cover four key areas:
1.) Storing carbon,
2.) Preventing flooding,
3.) Boosting urban well-being, and
4.) Purifying water.
The challenge
Our goal was to engage a notoriously hard-to-reach expert audience, including policy makers. We needed to demonstrate how WWT’s mapping tools could help decision-makers understand the potential of wetland restoration and creation at local and national scales. We also needed to position wetlands as a quick, affordable solution to some of the UK’s biggest environmental, social and economic issues in an evergreen way, whilst the charity evolves in direction.
The approach
Carefully integrated verbal and visual storytelling through an interactive webpage that showcases the environmental, social, and economic value of wetlands. We engaged decision-makers and stakeholders by translating technical information into benefit-led narratives and messaging supported by a full-funnel suite of resources and assets tailored for this expert audience.
Explainer animation: A simplified animation of the Potential Wetland Map demonstrates how each layer appears and what users can select. This visualisation is featured in an interactive long-read tool, where it visually complements the accompanying copy.

Interactive long read (using shorthand): Designed with Shorthand, the interactive long-read web experiences serve as a foundation to explore the challenges, solutions, and opportunities that wetlands offer in the UK. Through value-driven messaging, the copy and design were designed together to visualise the benefits of restoration whilst demonstrating how to use the Wetland Potential Map to assess the value of wetlands for flood resilience, carbon storage, water quality, and well-being across the UK.
“Developing the materials for our Wetland Potential Maps wasn’t an easy task – the subject matter was complex, with lots of data to untangle. But the Enviral team got to grips with the topic quickly and brought a unique angle to telling the story. It was an absolute pleasure to work with the team – creative, collaborative and a lot of fun!”
